How to lower the costs of learning to drive

Learning to drive doesn’t have to be expensive when you follow a few simple tips

With everything you have to take on while learning to drive, one of the last things you’re going to want to deal with is figuring out how you’re going to pay for it.

The DVSA states it will take approximately 45 hours of practice and lessons in order to pass a driving test. In total, this roughly equates to a little over £1,000 – and that’s only for your lessons!

Unfortunately, when you start to add in other expenses like study materials and exams, your learning to drive bills are likely to go up even more.

Thankfully, learning to drive doesn’t have to cost you a fortune, which is why we’ve put together some helpful tips for lowering your costs.

Take advantage of free learning materials

Even though it may be one of the lesser expensive parts of learning to drive, it’s equally as important that you’re well prepared for the theory test. Should you have to take it more than once, it’s going to start costing you more. There are a variety of free learning materials out there, especially online. So, instead of spending your money on paid mobile apps, books or CDs, it’s worth a shot to look around for free guides. Another place to find helpful guides is the DVSA website where they offer free mock tests to help drivers prepare for their theory test.

Practice with your friends and family

Who doesn’t like free lessons? An easy way of getting some free practice in is to go on drives with family members.

In order to supervise a learner driver, the person must:

The more experience you get behind the wheel, the more confident you’ll be as you prepare for your practical driving test. As you become more comfortable in your driving abilities, you may not even need to purchase as many lessons from an instructor!

If your parents are interested in helping out, Admiral’s put together a useful guide that’s filled with top tips from a driving instructor to help out mums and dads who are teaching their son or daughter to drive alongside a professional.

Pass your tests the first time!

It sort of sounds like a no-brainer, but making sure you pass your theory and practical tests the first time around is important if you’re trying to save as much money as you can. Unfortunately, the practical tests aren’t cheap, so if you have to take it more than once it’s going to end up costing you. At the moment, weekday driving tests cost £62 and weekend tests cost £75, so be sure you feel confident and ready when you decide to take it.

Don’t forget insurance

When you have your provisional licence, it’s important to remember you must have valid car insurance while you’re learning. In some cases, drivers are added onto a family member or friend’s policy but this is often an expensive option. Admiral’s Learner Driver Insurance offers an affordable way for learners to be covered while they have a provisional licence. With this type of policy, you have the option of being covered for seven days, one, two or three months. Learner Driver Insurance is a cost-effective way to be insured while you’re learning to drive in mum or dad’s car and it won’t affect their No Claims Bonus if you need to make a claim.
